The Uyuni salt flats are located in southwest Bolivia near the crest of
the Andes.
The salt flats cover over 4,000 square miles and contain approximately
10 billion tons of salt.
The salt flats form a stunningly flat and reflective surface that
transforms into a giant mirror when covered with a thin layer of water.
The area has incredibly clear skies, minimal light pollution, and
stunning sunrises and sunsets visible across the expansive horizon.
Local legend says ghosts roam the salt flats on moonless nights and
vanish without a trace when approached.
The high elevation, intense sun, and extreme flatness make distances
very difficult to judge on the salt flats.
Tourists visit the salt flats to see the unique landscape, take
perspective-bending photos, and watch the sunset paint the white salt various shades of pink, purple, and orange.
